Recreation classes are recommended for beginners of all ages and for pre-school students. This class uses the basics taught in creative movement and expands their knowledge of ballet terminology using barre and across the floor combinations. A special emphasis is given to technique and body placement to improve balance and body control. Stretch and flexibility exercises are included. The second part of the class is devoted to tap. Tap technique is introduced and all parts of the tap shoe are worked to create different sounds. Terminology and counting is the emphasis to facilitate their patterns and weight changes required for alternate foot work. Children are taught to build patterns from the basic shuffle. Heel work begins after they have mastered the basics.
3-4 year old combination class: This is a class for 3 year olds specially designed to develop gross motor skills through songs, simple dance movements, props and games. Basic ballet technique and terminology are taught with an emphasis on movement and patterns. Balance, control and lines are some of the many skills that each student develops while in class. Tap is introduced for fine motor control and foot dexterity. Students learn to work different parts of the foot to create steps, combinations and patterns. Very little heel work is taught at this age.
5-7 year old combination class: This is a class for the 2nd and 3rd year student and incorporates ballet terminology, barre and across the floor combinations. A special emphasis is given to technique and body placement, strength, and flexibility. Tap technique is introduced. Terminology and counting are emphasized. Beginning heel and toe work is introduced. Combination classes are divided into age appropriate groups based on ability and previous dance experience.
